The short answer
A humidifier, not an air purifier. Nosebleeds that appear in winter and stop in spring track the moisture content of the air, not its particle content. An air purifier removes particles and changes humidity not at all, so it addresses nothing here. Confirm with a hygrometer: if the room is below 30% relative humidity, that is the variable to change.

Why the seasonal pattern is the clue
The pattern people describe is unusually consistent: nothing all summer, then within a couple of weeks of the heating coming on it starts, and it stops again in spring. That timing matches the collapse in indoor relative humidity that heating cold air produces - and it does not match pollen, which peaks in spring and summer, or dust, which is fairly constant year-round.

How to tell if this is your problem
- It started when the heating did, and it is worse in the mornings.
- Static shocks around the house. This is the free humidity indicator.
- Lips and skin are cracking at the same time.
- A hygrometer in the bedroom reads below 30%.
That last one is the only conclusive test, and it costs less than a filter. The EPA’s stated range is 30-50% relative humidity, below 60%.
What actually fixes it, in order
- Seal the drafts. Free, permanent, and it reduces the volume of cold air you have to heat and therefore dry out.
- Stop over-venting. Run bathroom and kitchen extractors long enough to clear steam and no longer, in winter only.
- Add moisture to the bedroom specifically. This is a night-time problem in a single room, and treating that room is far more effective than treating the house.
- Watch the windows. If condensation appears, you have gone as far as the building allows - back off rather than pushing higher.
When it is not the air
Environmental dryness is one cause among several, and this site is only qualified to talk about the environment. Nosebleeds that are frequent, heavy, hard to stop, happening to only one nostril consistently, or occurring alongside bruising or other symptoms are not a humidity question and should be taken to a clinician. Fixing the air is worth doing regardless; it is not a substitute for asking someone qualified.

What it costs to run
About $20-22 a year in electricity across a heating season at 12 hours a day, plus wicks.
50 W / 1000 x 12 hours x 365 days = 219 kWh = $40.16 a year if run year-round. Most people run a humidifier for roughly half the year, so call it $20-22, plus replacement wicks at the manufacturer's stated interval.

Very dry air is the environmental factor with the clearest link, because it dries nasal tissue directly. Heavy smoke and particulate exposure is irritating in its own right. Ordinary indoor dust is a much weaker candidate, and if that were the driver you would expect year-round symptoms rather than seasonal ones.

A filter-based purifier does not remove moisture from air, so it should not dry a room out. What it does do is move a lot of air around - if the unit is blowing directly at your face all night, that airflow itself can be drying. Move the unit rather than removing it.
