Best Air Purifiers for Smoke
The one category where the carbon stage matters more than the HEPA rating - and where the running cost of the top pick is genuinely high.

Two questions decide this purchase, and both sit above the picks because getting either wrong makes the picks irrelevant.
Is an air purifier the right fix for this?
For smoke, largely yes - with an important qualification. Smoke is particulate plus gases. A HEPA stage handles the particulate, which is the fraction a particle monitor sees and the fraction most associated with health guidance. An activated carbon stage handles the gases, which is the fraction you smell.
A purifier with a thin carbon layer will visibly improve a monitor reading during a smoke event and leave the room still smelling of smoke. If your complaint is the smell specifically, carbon capacity is the specification that matters, and HEPA vs carbon filters explains why it is so rarely published.
Where a purifier is not the fix: an active indoor source. Someone smoking in the room, a fireplace that backdrafts, or a kitchen with no working hood. The purifier runs permanently against a continuous input and the carbon saturates fast.
What size you actually need
AHAM’s standard rule is a smoke CADR of two-thirds the room’s square footage - their published example being 132 CFM for a 200 sq ft room. For wildfire smoke specifically, AHAM recommends a smoke CADR equal to the room’s square footage, which is 50% more capacity.

Note what that last row means in practice: for wildfire conditions in a 400 sq ft room, none of the popular mid-range units is sufficient on its own. Two units, or one unit and a smaller room, is the honest answer. Sizing detail at CADR explained.
When to buy nothing at all
- The source is indoors and removable. Deal with the source; the filter is downstream of it.
- You have not sealed the room. During a smoke event, closing windows and blocking the obvious gaps does more than any purifier, and it is free - wildfire smoke indoors covers the sequence.
- The smell is musty rather than smoky. That is moisture, and no purifier fixes it.

What it costs to run

70 W / 1000 x 12 hours x 365 days = 306.6 kWh. At 18.34 cents/kWh that is $56.23 a year. Over three years that is roughly $95 more than the Levoit Core 400S at the same hours - typically more than the price gap between the two units at purchase.
What is good about it
- AHAM-verified CADR, which means the figure was measured to the AC-1 standard rather than asserted by marketing
- A real granular carbon filter, which is what actually adsorbs gases and odors
- The washable pre-filter slows down how fast the expensive filter loads up

- 70 W is roughly double the Levoit Core 400S for a similar CADR, and you pay that difference every year
- PlasmaWave is an ionizing stage; it can be switched off, and we would switch it off
Who should skip this
Skip this if odor is not your problem. Buying for dust and pollen alone means paying a 70 W electricity premium for a carbon stage you will not use.

About $6 a year running 24/7 on speed one, or $121 a year running 24/7 on speed three.
Speed 1: 3.7 W / 1000 x 24 x 365 = 32.4 kWh = $5.94 a year. Speed 3: 75.3 W / 1000 x 24 x 365 = 659.6 kWh = $120.97 a year. That twenty-fold spread is the most important number on this page, and it is why we chase per-speed figures instead of accepting a single rated wattage.

Skip this if you only run a purifier for an hour or two at a time. Its whole advantage is low-speed efficiency over long hours, and short bursts on high speed give that straight back.

38 W / 1000 x 12 hours x 365 days = 166.4 kWh. At 18.34 cents/kWh that is $30.52 a year at rated power - and the unit only draws its full 38 W on the top fan speed, so a mid setting lands nearer $25. Add the replacement filter, which you should price before you buy rather than after.
What is good about it
- Levoit publishes coverage at both 1 ACH and 4.8 ACH, which is unusually straight - most brands quote only the flattering 1 ACH number
- 38 W is low for this CADR, which is what keeps the running cost down
- 22 dB on its lowest setting is quiet enough to sleep beside
- Carbon, pet-allergy and smoke-specific replacement filters are sold for the same body
What is not
- We could not find a published filter replacement interval in Levoit's specification, so we are not quoting one
- The 1,718 sq ft headline is a single air change per hour, which is not a useful rate for allergies
Who should skip this
Skip this if your room is under 200 sq ft. The Core 300S covers that at lower power and lower cost, and the extra CADR buys you nothing in a small bedroom.

What is good about it
- PM2.5 is the number that matters during a smoke event, and a monitor is the only way to tell whether closing the windows actually worked
- Small enough to move room to room, which is how you find where the smoke is getting in

- Consumer optical particle sensors drift and are not laboratory instruments; treat readings as relative rather than absolute
- It does not measure humidity, so it is not a substitute for a hygrometer

+−Do air purifiers remove cigarette smoke?
They reduce the particulate substantially and the smell partially, for as long as the carbon holds out. They do not remove the residue that settles on walls, fabric and ceilings, which is a large part of why a room smells of smoke long after the smoking stopped. A purifier treats air, not surfaces.
+−What CADR do I need for wildfire smoke?
AHAM recommends a smoke CADR equal to the room’s square footage for wildfire smoke, rather than the usual two-thirds. A 250 sq ft bedroom therefore wants 250 CFM rather than 167.
+−Will an air purifier help with the smell of a fireplace?
With the airborne smoke, yes, in proportion to its carbon. With a fireplace that is backdrafting into the room, no - that is a flue or ventilation problem, and it is one worth resolving for reasons beyond smell.
+−Should I run a purifier on high during a smoke event?
Yes - CADR is measured at maximum fan speed, so that is when the unit delivers what it is rated for. The cost is noise and power: a unit drawing 3.7 W on speed one may draw 75 W on speed three, which is a twenty-fold difference for the same hours.
+−Is an ozone generator better for smoke smell?
Ozone generators are a different category of device with genuine safety considerations, and California’s Air Resources Board operates a certification program for indoor air cleaners partly because of ozone emissions. We do not recommend them and we do not link to them.
+−How long until the smell goes?
Airborne smoke clears within hours once the source stops and the room is being filtered. Smell that persists for days is coming off surfaces - fabric, carpet, paint - and that needs cleaning rather than filtering.
