Getting Rid of Smoke Smell
The air clears quickly. The walls do not. Most people buy a device for the half of the problem that would have solved itself.

The short answer
Ventilate, then clean surfaces, then wash textiles, then filter what remains. Airborne smoke clears within hours on its own once the source stops. A smell that lasts days or weeks is residue on walls, ceilings, carpet and fabric - and an air purifier cannot reach any of it. Cleaning is the fix; filtration is the finishing step.
Why the smell outlasts the smoke
Smoke deposits an oily residue on every surface it touches. That residue continues to release volatile compounds into the air for a long time afterwards - so the room keeps smelling of smoke even though there is no longer any smoke in it.
This is the crucial distinction, because it decides where your money goes. If you buy a purifier to solve a surface problem, it will run continuously, saturate its carbon filter repeatedly, and the smell will keep returning. That is not a defective unit - it is the wrong tool.

The order that works
1. Ventilate (free, first, and often enough on its own)
Windows open, cross-ventilation if you can get it, fans pointing outward. If the source has stopped and the outdoor air is clean, this handles the airborne fraction within hours at zero cost.
2. Replace the HVAC filter
It has been collecting smoke residue and it is now a source in its own right, releasing it into every room the system serves. This is cheap and it is often the step that produces a sudden improvement people cannot explain.
3. Wash the hard surfaces
Walls, ceilings, doors, window frames, light fittings, inside cupboards. A degreasing cleaner, because the residue is oily. Ceilings matter more than people expect - smoke rises, and the ceiling has been collecting it the whole time.
4. Deal with the textiles
Curtains, cushion covers, bedding, rugs into the wash. Upholstery and fitted carpet professionally cleaned. In a serious case - a house fire, or a decade of indoor smoking - carpet and underlay may simply need replacing, and no amount of cleaning changes that.
5. Seal what remains
Where smell persists in walls after washing, a stain-blocking primer before repainting is the standard approach. Ordinary paint over smoke residue tends not to hold it back.
6. Then filter
Now a purifier with a genuine activated carbon stage has a finite job - handling the residual release from surfaces you could not fully clean. This is where a carbon-heavy purifier earns its place, and it will not saturate in a week the way it would have if you had started here.
What does not work
- Air fresheners and plug-ins. They add a smell on top of a smell.
- Bowls of vinegar or coffee grounds. Very small adsorptive capacity against a whole room, and no effect on residue.
- An air purifier alone, in a room with heavy residue. It will work continuously against a source it cannot reach.
- Ozone generators. Widely promoted for exactly this job. They are a different category of device with genuine safety considerations, and we do not recommend them.

What it costs to run
About $56 a year in electricity at 12 hours a day, before filters.
70 W / 1000 x 12 hours x 365 days = 306.6 kWh. At 18.34 cents/kWh that is $56.23 a year. Over three years that is roughly $95 more than the Levoit Core 400S at the same hours - typically more than the price gap between the two units at purchase.
What is good about it
- AHAM-verified CADR, which means the figure was measured to the AC-1 standard rather than asserted by marketing
- A real granular carbon filter, which is what actually adsorbs gases and odors
- The washable pre-filter slows down how fast the expensive filter loads up
What is not
- 70 W is roughly double the Levoit Core 400S for a similar CADR, and you pay that difference every year
- PlasmaWave is an ionizing stage; it can be switched off, and we would switch it off
Who should skip this
Skip this if odor is not your problem. Buying for dust and pollen alone means paying a 70 W electricity premium for a carbon stage you will not use.

+−How long does it take to get smoke smell out of a house?
The airborne part, hours. The surface part depends entirely on how much residue there is - a single burnt pan is a day, and years of indoor smoking can mean washing every surface and replacing carpet. The variable is residue, not time.
+−Will an air purifier get rid of smoke smell?
It will reduce the airborne fraction while it runs, in proportion to its carbon capacity. It cannot touch residue on walls, ceilings or fabric, which is what makes a smell persist. Clean first, then filter.
+−Does painting over smoke smell work?
Only with a stain-blocking primer first, and only after washing. Ordinary paint applied straight over smoke residue frequently lets the smell through within weeks.
+−What is the fastest way to clear smoke from one room?
Open a window at each end for cross-ventilation, put a fan in one of them pointing out, and close the door to the rest of the house so you are not distributing it. Faster than any appliance, and free.

Change the filter first - that is cheap and often sufficient. Full duct cleaning is worth considering after significant smoke damage, but it is a substantial job and we would not reach for it before the filter and the surfaces.
